The Essential Woman, mixed media, graphite & pen & ink, 11” x 15"

Rochelle Marcus Dinkin is a Philadelphia based painter and mixed media artist whose
lush and ornately patterned compositions illustrate scenes from an ongoing mythic
fairytale. Based around a central female character - The Mystical Heroine - the works
entice the viewer to embark on the heroine’s journey, traveling through Dinkin’s
imaginative, magical realms where personal mythologies unfold. Influenced by medieval
art, folklore, outsider art, jewish thought, and her own personal experiences as a woman,
wife, mother and former art therapist, she has amassed a massive archive of oil paintings
and mixed media works on paper. Each piece is a vignette of an enchanting, colorful, and
allegorical world filled with human archetypes, fantastical animals, symbolic imagery, and
intricately hand-drawn patterns. As a youth growing up in Northeast Philadelphia, Dinkin
graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, receiving the Pratt Award and
the Drake prize. She has been the subject of over 40 solo exhibitions in the Philadelphia
area and New York city, and is a recipient of the Fleisher Art Memorial show (sponsored
by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2022 she had a one woman show at Pennsylvania
Academy of Fine Arts, the oldest art museum in the country.
